XMC for Metadata
Xpress for Metadata Controllers (XMC) combines uniform and predictable
performance appropriate for metadata management, with the fastest
sustainable low-latency I/O available.
The XMC appliance was designed to provide the best available
service for metadata management.
- Latency.
XMC delivers predictable, uniform, scalable I/O across
reads, writes, read-write mixes, small-to-large block-size,
sequential or random access, and any combination thereof.
Write performance comes without penalty, nearly reaching read
performance, whether random or sequential. XMC does not require
managing system RAM, application tuning, device tuning,
or dedicated file systems.
An independent laboratory
found that the XMC's worst recorded performance was
better than an industry leading disk array's fastest
recorded cache performance.
- Scalability.
XMC uses block I/O with standard Fibre Channel
interconnect. Individual XMC units provide
16-256GB capacity, scaling to any capacity via
standard Storage Area Network (SAN) methods.
-
Convenience.
XMC connects directly to servers or to a SAN fabric.
No configuration is necessary out of the box. The design
emphasizes standard interfaces in all applicable areas, such
as SNMP and syslog for event monitoring, HTTP for the GUI,
and SSH for the command-line interface. Installing,
monitoring, and managing an XMC is fast and easy.
What would you do differently if you could manage your metadata with
orders of magnitude better performance and rational pricing?
Key features of the XMC include:
- Sustainable Low Latency.
Uniform microsecond response time under load. No other
technology provides remotely comparable performance
for metadata storage with similar response time,
throughput and support for random or sequential I/O
(reads, writes, mixtures, small and/or large blocks
concurrently). Latency performance remains steady,
even with high concurrency.
- Concurrency.
Compared to any existing technology, XMC provides the
best concurrent I/O access available - and without penalties.
XMC will provide hundreds of concurrent initiators uniform
and predictable performance.
- Performance.
Compared to buffer cache, XMC provides equivalent
performance but also provides persistence,
recoverability, shareability, and scalability across
systems, health monitoring, and native reporting.
Compared to flash drives,
the XMC provides orders of magnitude faster
performance, more reliable data integrity, and system-level
management resources, but without any write-penalty,
application tuning, performance wobble, or temporal storage
degradation.
Compared to disk arrays, XMC
provides orders of magnitude better latency, dramatic
IOPS cost-advantages, and orders of magnitude superior
"greenness".
- Green Savings.
The energy alone needed to power a disk array
delivering 200,000 IOPS (or 1/2 an entry-level XMC)
costs 2X more in one year than an XMC unit costs.
Apples-to-apples, the energy needed to power an XMC
costs 5% (yes, 1/20th) the energy needed to power a
comparably performing disk array.
- Scalability.
XMC capacity reaches 256 GB in a box. Since XMC uses
block I/O, adding more capacity is no different than
adding another disk to a Storage Area Network (SAN).
Need 2 TB of metadata? Add 8 XMCs.
- Maintainability.
XMC units provide native internal health monitoring and
reporting. Units "self-heal" on-the-fly for many
problems.
- All I/O Patterns "Sing".
XMC performs uniformly well across all I/O profiles:
small blocks, large blocks, reads, writes, random
reads, random writes, mixtures of reads and writes,
small random writes, high load, high concurrency.
The performance numbers will surprise even a seasoned
storage architect, from latency to throughput. Contact
Econnectix for specifics.
- Seek Time.
On a sustained basis, XMC provides more than 125X
better seek time than the world's fastest recorded
performance spike on a spindle disk. An independent,
third party analysis determined that the fastest recorded
cache performance for a leading disk array was slower
than the slowest sustained performance recorded for
an XMC.
- Persistence Modes.
XMC emphasizes DRAM storage, but intelligently uses
other integrated media for persistence security. Users may
select policy-based persistence guarantees on a per
LUN basis.
- 1.8 Million RPM Performance.
The XMC provides orders of magnitude superior
performance compared to spindle disk, flash disk,
or disk arrays.
- Management Interfaces.
XMC provides a command line interface (CLI) and GUI.
The CLI permits managing any number of XMCs en
masse through scripting. The GUI provides
easy management of all aspects of the device.
- Operating Systems.
Linux, Windows, Solaris, and AIX supported.
- Automated Health Monitoring.
The XMC self-heals for most problems that can occur,
eliminating problems before they ever are noticed. Additionally,
XMC constantly monitors storage health, and can report status
via SNMP, Syslog, or HTTP down to the second.

- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
The XMC comes standard with a UPS to protect against
downtime. If a power outage does occur, the XMC will
stay up as long
as possible, gracefully shutting-down only if or when
necessary to protect the data. When you bring the
XMC back online after an outage, your data will
be right where it should be.
